GRANT PENNY

Grant Penny is a contemporary paper collage artist whose work is made primarily from a handmade paper from Nepal known as Lokta paper.

Over the years Grant has made an effort to have creative endeavors that are separate from his work as a graphic designer. Something hands on, tactile. A combination of these personal explorations evolved into the paper collage pieces that he creates today. The work may best be described as minimalist. The subjects of the pieces are often singular and limited to a palette of 2-3 colors. "Ultimately I seek and crave simplicity and I try to convey that feeling of simplicity in my work."

Grant was born in Sanford, North Carolina, a small town 35 miles southwest of Raleigh. His mother was an artist, art teacher and graphic designer. Her paintings on the walls, a potter’s wheel on the back porch, visiting museums and galleries – Art was prevalent during his formative years, and continues to be a force in his everyday life.

He and his wife, Carly,  moved to Asheville, NC in 2003. Like most of the people that live here, they simply felt drawn to this city. An abundance of art, culture, food, nature and genuinely happy people. "It’s a very special place and we’re lucky to call it home. Our family grew in 2011 with the birth of our daughter, Emaline."
