Axis of Variations

Spalted ambrosia maple and steel sculpture by Tom Schneider
Formed from spalted ambrosia maple, this sculpture is composed of six curved wooden segments suspended along a central steel rod. Each segment is cut from a turned bowl carrying the memory of its original wholeness while entering a new relational order. The elements float in vertical sequence, their orientation subtly adjustable. Through rotation, countless elegant variations emerge, transforming the sculpture into a living exploration of balance, tension, and possibility. A steel-weighted base grounds the piece, holding space for the suspended forms to hover in quiet dialogue with gravity. The work asks for stillness, inviting the viewer to sense the shifting relationship between solidity and openness, structure and flow.
